Year 2 visit la Villa Savoye
To celebrate ‘La Journée du Patrimoine’, Year 2 children were invited to a workshop at the Villa Savoye in Poissy, which was designed as a futuristic home in the 1920s by the French architect Le Corbusier. It was explained how the villa was designed on 3 principles - to be clever, strong and beautiful. The children then did lots of activities to understand what these ideas meant and looked at materials used in building which was a super help to our Science Topic this term! We learned what a foundation is, about beams and columns and did some wonderful hands-on construction. Finally we voted on our favourite building from a set of pictures. The children had lots of fun.
Here are a few comments from them:
“I liked it when we built a tower with a foundation.” - Hugo
“I enjoyed trying to blow the tower over when it was in the pot.” - Marc
“I learned about materials in a building - wood, metal and plastic.” - Subahana
“I like the bathroom.” - Maia
“The bath was made of mosaic.” - Hugo
“I learnt that American soldiers used the Villa Savoye during the war.” - Joel
